Milford Sound

Day 6, Thursday:

The sounds located in the south (Milford, Doubtful...) are actually fiords, but when an early explorer came into the region, he mistakenly called Milford and Doubtful sounds rather than fiords and the name stuck.

After our cruise through the Sound, we walked the short distance to Bowen Falls. It was a pretty walk ending with the view of the spectacular waterfall, however, the sandflies were laying-in-wait for any passerby to attack. We cut our walk short and quickly headed back toward the vistor's center.

On the road back to Te Anau, we pulled over for a hike. We walked the first leg of the track to the nice Hollyford River that tumbled over a lot of rocks through the woods (Humboldt Falls). That was by far the easiest part of that hike. From then on it was a lot of climbing, jumping over something or other, grabbing trees for support, etc. I found it to be pretty challenging, and sadly, we didn't make it to the end. It started getting dark and we thought that type of hike in darkness would not be a good idea to try.
