Day #1

Camp just above Mile 20

Dinner: vegetable & cheese casserole, herbed rice, sauteed fish, pears and sauce

Day #2

Breakfast: Banana pancakes & bacon

Hike up North Canyon (+/- Mile 20.5)
Hit the "Roaring 20s" rapids

Lunch at Shinumo Wash, Mile 29

Camp at Bucksfarm Canyon, Mile 41

Dinner: BBQ chicken, asparagus, Waldorf Salad, spice cake

Day #3

Breakfast: Canyon McMuffins (whole wheat muffins, filled with fried egg, cheese and ham). Lunch and hike in Saddle Canyon (+/- Mile 41) Randy's tip before the hike: "You might get your feet wet". At one point we were forging through water up to our chins!! Saw lots of deer today.

Camp at Anasazi Granaries Nankoweap Canon, Mile 53

Hike to Anasazi Granaries

Dinner: Lasagne, parmesan garlic bread, cucumber salad, cheescake.

Day #4

Breakfast: Amigas (Egg cassserole baked with tortilla chips, onions, mushrooms, olives and cheese)

Lunch and extremely hot hike at Carbon Canyon (+/- 64.5) ending at Lava Canyon (65.5) Left Marble Canyon and "officially" entered Grand Canyon

Camp under Unkar Rapid, Mile 74

Dinner: Steak, mashed potatoes & gravy, salad, brownies

 

Day #5: Phantom Ranch
Lose a few, Gain a few

Breakfast: French toast & sausages

Thunder, lightning and rain! First day of really big rapids.

Lunch at Phantom Ranch. A few go home and hike out of the canyon in the rain: David, Carol, Tetsuro, Dan, Woodrow, Carol, Bruce and Craig. Pick up those who hiked in: Charlie, Kim, Tess, Steve, Jeff, Gary, Eric, Sean and Shelly.

Camp at Monument Creek, Mile 93, just above Granite Rapid. We fall asleep to the roar of the rapid we have to face first thing in the morning.

Chris tries to shoot Granite (just for fun...) in an inflatable kayak and swims...

Dinner: Stir-fry, rice, salad, fortune cookies

Day #6

Breakfast: Western omelet, grapefruit

Our longest, most consistent rapid day, starting with Granite and Hermit followed by other big ones all day long, including "the jewels" (Agate, Sapphire, Turquoise - and the mighty Crystal)

Camp 119 Mile Creek, Mile 119

Dinner: BBQ Pork chops, stuffing, coleslaw, peach cobbler.

Day #7

Breakfast: Blueberry pancakes & bacon

Hike in Blacktail Canyon (just below Mile 120) - plunge pool!

Randy's boat flips at Spector Rapid! Sean, Tracy, Paula, Jake and Jim take a swim but all quickly get back to the boat and flip it over. (Mile 129)

Camp at Deubendorff Rapid, Mile 131

Dinner: Spagetti, salad, garlic bread, cheesecake.

Day #8

Breakfast: One pan egg casserole

Choice of hikes: short ones to Deer Creek or Tapeats Terrace; long one to Thunder River, just above Mile 134. Mystery Lunch.

Camp and hike at "lowest" campground above Mile 137

Dinner: Make your own burritos

 

Day #9

Breakfast: French toast & sausauge

Lunch and hike up Matkatamiba Canyon, Mile 148.

Camp below Upset Rapid, Mile 150.5 (opposite Burton memorial). A flash flood occurred during the night waking nearly everyone up as water came careening over the ledge some were camped under. People quickly pitched in to help move John and Louise and Peter's tents and belongings so they didn't get swept away. It was an amazing spectacle to hear the roar and watch the sheer power of the water as it tumbled over the edge of the ledge.

Dinner: Clam fettucini, salad, spice cake

Day #10

Breakfast: Amigas (see day 4)

Hiking at Havasu Canyon

Camp at National Rapid, Mile 166

Dinner: Chicken enchilada pie, coleslaw, cornbread

Party that evening with the Arizona River Runners motor rig crew. A lot of alcohol was had by all.

Day #11

Breakfast: ???

A few people had hangovers from the night before!! Short hike up National Canyon for those who felt up to it.

Ran Lava Falls!

A few of us stopped for a shower after Lava. Lunch right after below little Lava.

Camp below Lava at Mile 186. A water fight involving nearly everyone ensued upon arrival to the camp

Dinner: Steak, asparagus, mashed potatoes. Chris, Gabe, Randy, Dave and Myron baked a birthday cake for Gary, complete with candles. It also included icing which caused a chocolate frosting fight.

Day #12

Breakfast: Bagels and cream cheese

Pullout at Whitmore Wash, just above Mile 188. We take a helicopter out of the canyon and arrive at Whitmore International Airport where we board a small plane to Las Vegas. There we go to our respective hotels and take long awaited showers.
